This was built in 2001 to commemorate the VIIIth Centenary of the founding of Baiona as a Royal Village. It is the work of Juan de Oliveira Viéitez and represents Alfonso IX, founder, protector and benefactor of Baiona.
The work consists of the figure of the king, standing, with clothing from the period, pointing at the floor with his forefinger, accompanied by his horse.
